How to Activate HTTPS In Your Blogger Custom Domain Without Buying Ssl Certificate

It is the dream of  every Blogger to protect his or her readers from Hackers and Viruses, but most of the Bloggers don't have money to buy the Ssl Certificate to update their blog from HTTP to HTTPS. Some of us even bought ssl certificate but don't know how to install it on their blog. So today I will teach you how I changed my custom blogger blog domain from HTTP to HTTPS.

What Is  The Difference Between HTTP And HTTP

Firstly let's start with http, according to Wikipedia HTTP is an application protocol, collaboration, and hypermedia information system. Http is the foundation of data communication for the world wide web.

You might now be thinking, what's Https? According to my own definition, it's an updated version of HTTP that adapts to the hypertext transfer protocol for secure communication over a computer network.

It's very easy for WordPress users to Switch their custom Domains over to HTTPS by buying ssl certificate, and after installing the Ssl Certificate, their site automatically changes to HTTPS.

Like I said in the beginning, most of us, blogger bloggers even bought the certificate and couldn't install it, some even used Cloudflare Free Ssl Certificate. And couldn't achieve what they wanted, do you know what's that? Their sites was not fully secure. And most of them are now campaigning that Google doesn't allow Ssl Certificate for blogger custom domain.

That's a lie, don’t listen to such rumors. It's the rumor formed by bloggers that don’t know anything about blogging. But today, I promise you that all the rumors you have heard are now moonlight stories.

Because if you don’t Switch your site over to HTTPS before June 2018, Google Chrome will mark your site as unsecure, as they said in a blog post.

So How Do I Switch My Custom Blogger Domain From HTTP To HTTPS

It’s very simple and easy, you won't even believe you this, we have been sleeping on top of diamonds, looking for diamond. No one knows that Google even preserved free https for our blogger custom domain.

You are already stretching your hand to do the thing right? Just read, very soon you will Switch your site, just stay with me.

To switch your http site over to https, login to your Blogger through this link, then go to settings. As shown in the screenshot below.
Then turn on the HTTPS Availability by changing no to Yes, refresh the page, you will see this, just as shown in the screenshot below.
It means that Google is switching and installing your free ssl certificate on your blog, so exercise patience and refresh the page after 5 minutes, and the yellow stuffs will clear. Then turn on the HTTPS Redirects changing the no to yes. And your blog will now become full secured blog with ssl certificate.

Hope this helps.

With rules repealed, what's next for net neutrality?

There is is a battle going on with the Federal Communications Commission's(FCC) because of net neutrality rules.

The worst part of it is that net neutrality required all web traffic to be treated equally, but the Republicans on the Federal Communications Commission(FCC) decried the regulatory structure as a gross overreach and quickly moved to reverse them once the Trump administration came to power.

According to a source, the reversal of the rules was published in the Federal Register Thursday, although it still remains month for the order to be implemented, but the supporters of net neutrality are now free according to the law to mount legal challenges to the action.
A coalition of Democratic state attorneys general, public interest groups and internet companies have vowed to fight in the courts. Twenty-three states, led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman (D), have already filed a lawsuit.

“An open internet, and the free exchange of ideas it allows, is critical to our democratic process. Repealing net neutrality will allow internet service providers to put corporate profits over consumers by controlling what we see, do, and say online,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “Consumers and businesses in New York and across the country have the right to a free and open internet, and our coalition of Attorneys General won’t stop fighting to protect that right.”

The emerging court battle over net neutrality could keep the issue in limbo for years.

Meanwhile, a separate battle over the rules is brewing in Congress.

Senate Democrats have secured enough support to force a vote on a bill that would erase the FCC’s December vote and leave the net neutrality rules in place.

The bill, which is being pushed by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), would use a legislative tool called the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to roll back the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality.

The entry of the FCC’s repeal order in the Federal Register Thursday means that the Senate has 60 legislative days to move on the CRA bill. Democrats have secured support from one Republican, Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), and need just one more to cross the aisle for the bill to pass the chamber.

“The internet doesn’t belong to big internet service providers and special interests who want to turn it into a toll road where consumers will pay more while the biggest corporations get to ride in the fast lane,” Markey said in a statement Thursday.

“With only 60 legislative days to find one more vote, I call on my Republican colleagues to join us and the vast majority of Americans who want the internet to remain free and open and a level playing field for everyone.”

Even if Democrats do manage to find the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, the bill is almost certain to die in the House. But Democrats see a roll call vote as an opportunity to make GOP members stake out a position on an issue that they think could resonate in the midterm elections.

On yet another front, Democratic states around the country have already launched their own attack on the FCC’s rules. Five governors (from Montana, Hawaii, New Jersey, Vermont and New York) have in recent weeks signed executive orders forbidding their states from doing business with internet service providers who violate net neutrality principles.

And, according to the pro-net neutrality group Free Press, legislatures in 26 states are weighing bills that would codify their own open internet protections.

The local efforts could ignite a separate legal battle over whether states have the authority to counteract the FCC’s order, which included a provision preempting them from replacing the rules.

For their part, Republicans who applauded the FCC repeal are calling for a legislation that would codify some net neutrality principles. They say doing so would allow for less heavy-handed protections that provide certainty to businesses.

But most net neutrality supporters reject that course, at least while the repeal is tied up in court and Republicans control majorities in both the House and Senate. They argue that such a bill would amount to little more than watered-down protections that would be unable to keep internet providers in check.

For now, Democrats seem content to let the battles in the courts and Congress play out.

Net neutrality protections ushered in a new era of creativity, civic engagement, and innovation,” said Raffi Krikorian, the Democratic National Committee’s chief technology officer. “The FCC’s new rules will roll back years of progress and could leave American families with fewer choices and higher costs.”

Krikorian added, “Over the next 60 days and beyond, we will keep fighting to protect the free and open internet, we don’t want net neutrality that is so critical to our democracy.”

Google Pay Now Available, How It Works?

Google has finally replaced Android Pay and Google Wallet with Google Pay, a new unified app that has the essential features on the previous payment apps.

Google Pay is more simple and easy to use. There is a cards tab for storing credit and debit card details securely. Google says that eventually, the app will support all Google products. The idea is to provide a consistent experience for users during checkout.
Recall that Google owns Android and many other apps on your Android device so this Google Pay payment platform is expected to be available in all. For now, it's already available on Playstore and you can also download the app on your device.

Google Pay does not share your card number when you use it to make a payment. If your debit or credit card has been stored on it, simply select google Pay at checkout. The app will handle the rest. This I believe is for security reasons and it's great.

The app supports NFC for mobile payments, as well as payments for web-based shopping exercises.

According to Google, users in the US and UK will also be able to send and request money through app just as it's done on PayPal. This feature will be added within a few months.

In summary, Google Pay will be available everywhere you need to shop – on websites, in apps, and at your favourite places around the world”.

You can download for Google Pay App for Android here and see stuffs for yourself.

PRESS RELEASE: The Federal Govern-ment, on Monday officially launched Digital Switch Over, DSO, in Enugu State.
Minister for Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed, made this known during the flag off where he said with the launch in Coal City, there was no better evidence of FG’s commitment to the rapid spread of the massive benefits of digital television to the people of Nigeria.

People of Enugu State will now join their counterparts in Jos, the FCT, Kwara and Kaduna states, in this new way of watching television.

The Minister, who lamented huge loss of revenue in the sector, said it has become imperative that Nigeria, urgently, puts in place an industry framework that will ensure that content producers receive their due for the value of the content they create, as well as providing objectives that guarantees the advertising community their Return-On-Investment on media placements.

Mohammed reiterated his call for establishment of Audience Measurement System to make our DSO sustainable for signal distributors, channel owners, TV content producers and advertisers. “Without the system, we will not see the growth in television and the value creation in the creative industry that the economy and people of Nigeria so desire.
Bringing Nigerian TV advertisement market in line with global best practices could bring an additional 200 to 400 million dollars of revenue to the industry, based on current comparisons with other African countries.

This is our next task and we invite all well meaning practitioners of this industry to join hands with us to achieve this.

The current measurement system is no longer ideal for the critical transitional phase before full DTT Migration. We need an objective and scientific Audience Measurement System that articulates the value of the content to consumers as well as the value of the audience to advertisers, particularly in the television sector.

WHATSAPP TRICK: How To Unblock Yourself If Someone Blocked You

Maybe you were blocked by someone who is so dear to you and you wish to unblock yourself on whatsapp, this tutorial will show you a whatsapp trick that can help you unlock yourself if someone blocks you.
WhatsApp BLOCK feature allows users to block any person they think is not worthy to be in their chatting list.

So many things can provoke someone to use the block button on you. Some of them is being too intrusive, insulting, arrogant, among others.

But in recent times, some of the reasons why a person blocks another is if he founds out that the person is a scammer. Also, some ex Boyfriends and Girlfriends blocks one another.

Additionally, some children blocks their parents, teachers and religious leaders for a reason best known to them.

But be it as it may, blocking you is not the end of the road for sure. You can get back to that person only if you adhere to the instructions below on how to unlock yourself on whatsapp.

Step 1: Write down your blocker’s phone number

If you have the contact that blocked you saved on your phone, write it down somewhere and delete it from your phone.

Step 2: Back up your chats

I believe you already know how to back up your WhatsApp chat (both messages and media files).

Well, if you don’t then here is a quick guide to creating a Google Drive backup:

Open WhatsApp.

Go to Menu Button > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.

Tap Back up to Google Drive and set up the backup frequency to your liking.

You will be prompted to select a Google account that you will back up your chat history to. If you do not have a Google account, tap Add account when prompted. Please remember the Google account you are using for the backup.

Tap Back up over to choose the network you wish to use for backup. Please note that backing up over cellular may result in additional data charges.

Step 3: Delete your WhatsApp account

  • Go to account settings on your WhatsApp and delete your account.
By deleting your number, it means you are no longer active on WhatsApp so technically, you cannot block someone who’s not on WhatsApp.

Whoever blocks you will no longer have you on the blocked list.

Step 4: Clear WhatsApp data

  • Now go to your phone settings > app > WhatsApp and clear the data.

Step 5: Reactivate WhatsApp

  • Open your WhatsApp and register your number on the WhatsApp platform. This time, you are registering for the first time over again.

Step 6: Restore Chat

  • Restore your chat back up.Make sure the same Google account that was used to perform the backup has been added to your phone.
  • Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
  • After verifying your number, you will be prompted to restore your messages and media from Google Drive.
  • After the restoration process is complete, tap Next and your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete.
  • After restoring your chats, WhatsApp will begin restoring your media files.
NOTE: You need to restore from the backup on your google drive but if you didn't do so, WhatsApp will automatically restore the backup from your local storage memory which could be SDcard or phone internal memory as the case may be.

Step 7: Re-add contact

Lastly, save the contact you wrote down earlier back on your phone. Now look for the person/contact that blocked you in the first place and send a message.

READ: WhatsApp’s long-awaited digital payments service goes live in India

If you cannot find the person in your WhatsApp contact list then you can really think that you are blocked by that individual.
Other common ways to know;

👉 If you have been blocked by that person then you would not be able to connect with that particular person. Check few more points–

👉 Check the profile of that person, if you can't see the "last seen" time of that person or if you are unable to see the status of that person, then it's obvious you have been blocked by him or her.

This is how to unlock your WhatsApp account whenever someone blocks you. I hope this is helpful.

Alcatel to announce three new phones on February 24

Two alcatel phone, the 5 and the 3V,
popped up on Amazon France last month, suggesting an upcoming launch. Today Alcatel USA confirmed their arrival along with a third smartphone - the alcatel 1X. All three devices will see the light of day on February 24 at MWC 2018.
The company did not say much, but the image is revealing enough. The alcatel 5, as previously leaked images suggested , will have no bezels on the sides, a tiny one on the bottom and a regular forehead for what it looks like a dual camera setup.

The alcatel 3V and the alcatel 1X are expected to impress in the low-midrange and ultra-affordable markets. They have a standard design with tall 18:9 displays and no home button on the front. The 3V will have the volume rocker on the left side and the power key on the right side, while the 1X will have all the buttons on the right side.
Known specs of the three phones are scarce, but we will report straight from MWC 2018 as soon as the devices are unveils.

WhatsApp digital payment service launched!

Last week Wednesday, WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging app, with over 1.2 billion users worldwide and 200 million in India alone, launched its digital payment service, with India being the first country to taste this.
WhatsApp cost Facebook $ 22 billion to acquire, but the company before now had not figured out a way to bring in cash to its parent. Thus, the launched payment service should delight Facebook. In India, according to the original plan, the payment platform will be geared toward small businesses employing less than 10 people.

India is a perfect target for the new platform: The country has the most users of WhatsApp in the world. In fact, WhatsApp is more popular than Facebook in India because of a few reasons that include poor bandwidth; meaning that the payment system in Facebook’s Messenger app is not accessible to the average Indian.

Although China has the largest population of Internet users at a reported 750 million, the country does not have a free-market economy. India does have some level of protectionism as well, but it appears the country is more receptive to companies from outside.

Another factor favoring India is the fact that the country is at present reportedly experiencing a boom in mobile payment; subsequent to its government’s announcement in 2016 of plans to remove large-denomination bank notes as a way to help crack down on tax evasion and counterfeits. The attendant shortage in notes seems to be driving the increased interest in mobile payment apps. There are reports that people are already using WhatsApp in India to sell goods, in an e-commerce portal mode, even though the app does not offer features that specifically support the practice.

As mentioned in the 10 April 2017 article in this column, digital payment services are nothing new in India, thereby paving the way for WhatsApp. This also means that WhatsApp has to compete with the incumbents. The Reserve Bank of India reported that in January of 2016, India recorded more than 262 million transactions worth over $1.3 billion in digital payment services, compared to 100 million transactions in October of 2015. The government of India has launched the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which allows banks and mobile apps to easily exchange currency.

Obviously, mobile financial transaction solutions have a special meaning for unbanked or under-banked communities in rural areas of developing countries such as Nigeria or India; providing impetus for technology. As a result, associated projects have attracted public and private funding from organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and USAID.

If you are on a supported network, you’ll see a Payments window under Setting in WhatsApp, through which you can navigate to select a bank from a long list. WhatsApp has partnered with ICICI Bank in India to process UPI payments across the platform. Both Android and iOS are reportedly supported.

With whom is WhatsApp going to lock horns in India digital payment service business? There are quite a few. A potential competitor for WhatsApp is Truecaller, an app out of Sweden that was developed to remove spam calls coming into your phone. Truecaller announced its intention, at the end of March 2017, to roll out a payments service in India, and plugging into the UPI platform by partnering with a local Indian bank (ICICI Bank).

M-Pesa might as well be the one for WhatsApp to beat in India. It is a mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service out of Kenya that was launched in 2007 by Vodafone for Safaricom and Vodacom, the largest mobile network operators in Kenya and Tanzania. M-Pesa is now being used throughout the developing world - Afghanistan, Kenya, India, South Africa, and Tanzania.

M-Pesa found its way into the Indian market in 2008, where it is locally referred to as M-Paisa, (the paisa is a subunit of the Indian rupee). The success of Kenya’s M-Pesa has reportedly generated a competitive environment, to the tune of almost 200 similar products! Vodafone M-Pesa was reportedly launched in India in 2013 and has brought financial and digital inclusion to more than 8.4 million Indians. As of the middle of last year, the service boasted of around 130,000 outlets across India, both in major towns and increasingly in rural areas. As a retailer or merchant in India, you simply need to download the Vodafone M-Pesa app, register for Vodafone M-Pesa Pay as a merchant, and your customers can use their (M-Pesa) wallet, bank account or debit/credit cards, in a completely seamless manner.

Paytm, an indigenous mobile payment platform in India, has also gained ground; receiving approximately $2 billion in financing from Alibaba and SoftBank. Paytm handles payments made by credit and debit cards, among other capabilities.

Thus, as it were, WhatsApp will not be “discovering” India with its new deployment. It is conceivable that a country like Nigeria, which has some similarities with India, could be targeted for WhatsApp’s payment system. However, the local banks in that country seem to be highly placed technologically to offer effective resistance.

There could be an entire line of Dyson electric cars

Best known for slick-looking vacuum cleaners and hand dryers, James Dyson has already stated his intentions to tackle a completely different machine — the electric car. Now, however, the inventor is looking to build more than just a niche model as the list of EV models on sale grows.
Dyson is planning a trio of new EVs for the next decade that will also adopt a solid-state battery pack, the Financial Times reported Wednesday, embarking on an estimated $2.8 billion project to give an Elon Musk-like jolt to the automotive market. The man behind radically designed appliances said in September he was planning a “radically different” type of electric car than what was on the market. Like Musk, the first car due early next decade would be a high-end model (but not a sports car) and be sold in relatively small numbers.

But what FT’s sources said was that Dyson’s endeavor would be followed by two more models that would be more mass market than his first. He is said to be investing in both lightweight materials (likely carbon fiber, which is used extensively on the BMW i3 electric vehicles), but also solid-state battery technology for cars.

Dyson isn’t the only one who wants that technology. The Fisker EMotion concept shown last month at CES is said to support the technology. But designer and company CEO, Henrik Fisker, is prepared to use lithium-ion batteries when the first cars are built late next year. Dyson is said to be prepared to do the same in order to get his first car to launch in 2020 or 2021. And Autocar reported that the company’s solid-state battery head left the company late last year.

Recent years have brought numerous EV startups trying to capture the limelight the way Tesla has. The dire fate of Faraday Future hasn’t scared off the likes of Byton and Fisker, however. Nor has it Dyson. And analysts think Dyson may have a better chance because he’s been able to understand manufacturing over the years. But with long-range EVs rolling out by major automakers, from Audi to Porsche to Volvo, as soon as this year, the landscape could be very different if and when Dyson reveals his first car.

Why does this digital abacus exist?

Sometimes, old fashioned things are better. I understand the arguments of those who prefer taking pen and paper notes to typing for example, or even people who prefer analog, vinyl recordings to digital ones.
But I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around the iBrain: Digital Abacus, currently looking for funding on Kickstarter. The fact that abacuses have fallen out of style since the adoption of the conventional Arabic number system that we use today doesn’t seem to have stopped iBrain from creating this, but that’s not a problem in and of itself. Abacuses are apparently still used to teach children math using physical representation, which is also fine.
My issue comes with the fact that this company has made a digital abacus, a phrase that feels inherently contradictory at a very basic level. Once you add Bluetooth and the ability to connect to a tablet, you have not improved the abacus, you have made a very weird calculator / game controller.

The new ZenBook 13 includes discrete graphics in an ultraportable package

We’re still waiting on Intel and AMD’s new partnership to help mainstream thin and light laptops with discrete graphics, but in the meantime Nvidia’s GeForce MX150 is the best blend of power and performance when portability is a priority. Asus now claims to have created the “thinnest laptop on the planet” to include discrete graphics: the ZenBook 13 UX331.
The-new-ZenBook-13-includes-discrete-graphics-in-an-ultraportable package
Asus also offers an MX150 in its Flip 14 two-in-one, but this new ZenBook 13, which was originally announced last year, is only 0.5-inches thick and weighs 2.5 pounds. The 1080p screen is a touchscreen, but there are no convertible hinge shenanigans. Asus claims “all-day battery,” with up to 14 hours of uptime, but that’s almost certainly a number that doesn’t include any intense gaming.

The MX150 isn’t going to compete with even budget desktop gaming builds in the framerate wars, but it should do fine with Overwatch and other popular titles designed for a wide range of hardware. It’s not built for VR, that’s for sure. Also, according to a review of a pre-release version of the UX331, Asus has downclocked the MX150 slightly, so you might not be getting as much performance as larger MX150 laptops which can afford to run the GPU at full speed.

With 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, a quad-core Intel Core i5-8250U processor, a single USB-C port, dual USB 3.0 plugs, and a microSD card reader, this is a nice amount of power and capability Asus has packed into a tiny, $999 package.

Google’s Pixel Buds are now available in the UK, Australia, and Germany

Google’s Pixel Buds were only available in the US and Canada when they first launched last fall, and now they’re making their way to Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, via Android Police.
As noted in our review, they’re not the best wireless headphones out there, although the Google Assistant integration is still top notch, even if the open-air design and poor fit options aren’t for everyone.

The Pixel Buds are available now from the online Google Store in the three new countries. They’ll set you back $249 AUD in Australia, €179 in Germany, or £159 in the UK, all of which work out to be between $195 to $220 after exchange rates, which is far more expensive than the $159 price tag that Google charges in the US.

Maximize your Turbo time with the latest Sony Vaio S

Vaio knows that feeling. That’s why its new Vaio S spec bump (as seen on AnandTech) was designed specifically to maximize how much Turbo you’re getting. The business laptop is mostly unchanged from last year’s model — the VGA port is still hanging on, and USB-C is still absent — but the internals have been bumped up to the latest 8th gen Intel processors.
As fun it is to say “Turbo time,” Vaio is actually very serious about this technology, which it dubs “Vaio TruePerformance.” Basically, it builds on Intel’s Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, which allows for bursts of high performance from laptop CPUs. Unfortunately, the realities of power consumption and heat dissipation don’t let that performance spike last very long on a typical laptop. Vaio claims the Vaio S can handle longer peak performance spikes (Turbo Boosts), but it can also handle a higher level of regular sustained performance without overheating or throttling, thanks to its strengthened power supply and improved cooling.

The Vaio S looks to be targeted at a sweetspot between ultrathin and light laptops and more powerful workstation laptops. Obviously, if you need a GPU to get your work done, the Intel HD Graphics 620 won’t be much help. The new Vaio S line starts at $1,199 for the Core i5 model, and goes all the way up to $2,199 for a Core i7 model with a 1GB PCIe SSD and 16GB of RAM.

Asus ZenFone 5 2018

The ZenFone 4 from Asus launched in North America just a few months ago, but the ZenFone 5 sequel is already leaking out. Evan Blass just dropped a few photos and specs of the upcoming ZenFone 5 Lite on Twitter (as spotted by Android Police). Most notably, the phone has a quad-camera setup: two 20MP sensors in the front, and two 16MP sensors in the back.

Dual selfie cameras are crowding into the mid-tier Android phone space. While flagship phones are content with fancy software (Google) and exotic sensors (Apple) to get interesting selfie results, Samsung’s A8, Oppo’s F3, Vivo’s X9s, and Huawei’s Honor 9 Lite are all dual selfie camera phones that have been announced in the past year.

The big question is if Asus will be able to build useful software to combine the two cameras into the bokeh selfies we all crave (like Samsung’s Live Focus mode on the A8), or if the cameras will work independently to merely provide different fields of view (like on the Oppo F3).

Evan also mentions that the phone will have a FHD+ screen, which means a 2160 x 1080 resolution in a 18:9 aspect ratio, and that it will be available in “midnight black,” “moonlight white,” and “rouge red.”

If the ZenFone 5 Lite is priced similarly to the ZenFone 4, it could hit in the $300-ish range, if or when it arrives in the US.

YouTube details how it will punish creators for ‘harming’ the community

YouTube this morning detailed new policy changes going into effect after the latest controversy featuring YouTube creator Logan Paul, who had advertising temporarily suspended on his account today over videos featuring the abuse of dead animals. YouTube has been reportedly working on these policy guidelines since the start of the year, as CEO Susan Wojcicki said earlier this month that one of her company’s goals in 2018 was to create clear policies to punish creators who do “something egregious that causes significant harm” to the community at large.
YouTube-details-how-it-will-punish-creators-for-harming- the-community
The changes are straightforward: YouTube says it reserves the right to strip a channel of its ability to serve ads and its access to premium monetization programs like Google Preferred and its YouTube Partner Program, as well as the right to cease recommending a channel’s videos across its network, if that channel proves harmful to the broader YouTube community. YouTube describes its community as including “advertisers, the media industry, and most importantly, the general public.” It’s not clear what exactly fits the definition of harmful in these cases, but it seems as if YouTube will take cues from both the greater YouTube community and the general public. More bluntly, YouTube.

The Google-owned video site has always held these powers over channel owners as a platform-owning tech company. However, YouTube has been relatively hands off over the years as it’s ballooned into one of the largest media destinations on the internet, largely in part thanks to the symbiotic relationship it has with creators, who share in YouTube’s ad revenues. The company’s longstanding approach — combined with recent sea changes in public sentiment toward Silicon Valley and its responsibility to police its platforms — has resulted in a reckoning.

Offensive and immature creators like Paul, and to a lesser extent YouTuber Felix “Pewdiepie” Kjellberg, are now forcing the company to make tough decisions on what types of content and off-site and on-video behaviors it deems unacceptable. These new changes introduced today more transparently codify YouTube’s newer, more strict approach against behavior the company feels harms its reputation and makes all of YouTube look lazily unregulated.

“We’ve long had a set of community guidelines that act as rules of the road for what creators can share on our platform and a set of ad-friendly guidelines for what they can monetize. We also have a system of strikes we use to enforce those guidelines which can ultimately result in a channel’s termination,” writes Ariel Bardin, YouTube’s vice president of product management, in a blog post. “But in very rare instances, we need a broader set of tools at our disposal that can be used more quickly and effectively than the current system of guidelines and strikes.”

In no uncertain terms, Bardin describes — without ever naming Paul — the damage that can be dealt by having large, immensely popular channels acting without any regard for the consequences. “When one creator does something particularly blatant — like conducts a heinous prank where people are traumatized, promotes violence or hate toward a group, demonstrates cruelty, or sensationalizes the pain of others in an attempt to gain views or subscribers — it can cause lasting damage to the community, including viewers, creators and the outside world,” Bardin writes, referencing how channel-owners like Paul have millions of fans, many of whom are impressionable young children.

“That damage can have real-world consequences not only to users, but also to other creators, leading to missed creative opportunities, lost revenue and serious harm to your livelihoods,” she adds. “That’s why it’s critical to ensure that the actions of a few don’t impact the 99.9 percent of you who use your channels to connect with your fans or build thriving businesses.”

Paul only recently returned to the platform in late January after a brief pause on his daily vlogging after a separate controversy involving his filming of a suicide victim in Japan’s Aokigahara forest, which sparked international outrage. Paul, it seems, did not learn much from the controversy, despite a suicide awareness video he made to reassure critics he understood the gravity of his actions, as his return has resulted in nothing but bad headlines and a continued pattern of behavior YouTube this morning called “potentially damaging” to the broader community and “unsuitable” for advertisers.” His latest mistake was to film himself tasering a dead rat repeatedly seemingly only for shock value.

“In the past, we felt our responses to some of these situations were slow and didn’t always address our broader community’s concerns. Our ultimate goal here is to streamline our response so we can make better, faster decisions and communicate them clearly,” Bardin concludes. “We believe strongly in the freedom of expression and we know that the overwhelming majority of you follow the guidelines and understand that you’re part of a large, influential, and interconnected community.
Read also: Most Watched Videos on YouTube Nigeria January 2018
But we also know that we have a responsibility to protect the entire community of creators, viewers, and advertisers from these rare but often damaging situations. We expect to issue these new consequences only in a rare handful of egregious cases, but hope they will help us prevent the actions of a few from harming the broader community.”

Android Messages may soon let you text from the web

For a year and a half now, Google’s semi-official strategy for messaging apps has been a three-legged stool: Allo for consumer chat, Hangouts for corporate chat, and good ol’ SMS for texting (with RCS in the future). None of those strategies were ever really going to challenge the players who are leading the messaging app space: WhatsApp, iMessage, Facebook Messenger.
It’s possible, however, that the last leg of that messaging stool is about to get a lot more interesting. Android Police just dug into the code for the very latest version of Android Messages, the app Google makes for SMS. And inside it are references to two very intriguing features.

The first is pretty straightforward and, one hopes, easy to implement: you may be able to easily send text messages from your computer soon. Just as you can with Allo and WhatsApp, it appears as though you’ll be able to go to a webpage, scan a QR code, and have it get connected up to your phone as an easier way to send texts. Android Police found code that indicates multiple browsers will be supported and, in fact, multiple computers may also be supported.

That’s all well and good — it takes care of a gap that Android users have had to use third-party products to fill for a long time. It’s also not super interesting because, well, SMS itself is not super interesting. Even paired with MMS, it doesn’t offer any of the features you expect from a modern texting app.

Which is where RCS, or Rich Communication Services, comes in. Android Messages has always been Google’s RCS app, but to date RCS as a standard has done what you expect standards to do: get lost in the shuffle as different companies either ignore it or implement it according to their own corporate whims.

RCS takes SMS and gives it some of the features you’d want: higher resolution images, read receipts, and typing indicators, among others. But its adoption has been dependent on carriers implementing it and making it compatible, which is one of the reasons it hasn’t gone anywhere.

That’s why Android Police’s look inside the new Android Messages app Android Police is so intriguing. They found code for a pop-up that reads “New! Text over Wi-Fi and data,” which is as close to a layman’s description of RCS as you’ll ever find. But the truly intriguing line comes in the fine print: “Chat features are powered by Google. By continuing, you accept the %1$s.”

See, like any modern messaging app, RCS really needs to be supported by a cloud-based infrastructure to work. Which leads to one of four possibilities for the code Android Police found:

  • Nothing to see here. This code is a lark and will come to nothing.
  • This is a feature for Google’s own carrier, Project Fi, and this is just the code necessary to turn on RCS for Fi users.
  • Google is just beefing up the RCS capabilities inside Android Messages, and if a carrier wants to offer RCS but doesn’t want to deal with the necessary infrastructure, Google will handle it.
  • Google has finally threaded the impossible messaging needle: created a modern messaging platform powered by Google services that won’t piss off the carriers too much, such that it can release a messaging app that can do for Android what iMessage does for iPhones: seamlessly supplant SMS.

Given the many, many years we’ve watched Google fail to execute on a messaging strategy that takes advantage of Android’s worldwide dominance, that last option is probably too much to hope for. Then again, it’s been a year and a half since the company announced a major change in its messaging app strategy, so we’re probably due for another pivot.
